Function And Potential Trouble

Your passenger car’s braking system works using hydraulics. When you press the brake pedal, a level and piston move to send brake fluid from the master cylinder through lines to the cylinder near each wheel. Once there, the fluid moves the calipers so the brake pads contact the rotors. These are the large discs that sit on the inside of the wheels. Note: Some older models and the rear wheels of some newer cars have drum brakes where a brake shoe contacts a drum turning inside each wheel. This hydraulic setup allows you to exert a small amount of force on the pedal and achieve the major result of stopping your car. When you bring your auto in for routine service visits, we’ll watch your brakes for you. You should have us do this at least once per year. However, if you notice any newly developing issues in the meantime, schedule a visit with us for brake repair. Signs of trouble include increased stopping distances, a burning odor, shaking or pulling sideways as you apply brakes, a spongy brake pedal, or a squealing sound.
